Govt to Adopt SDGs in ISPO Criteria

THE government is considering to strengthen Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) criteria by adopting values of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  SDGs, otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Each goals and target have to be achieved by 2030. Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said current ISPO criteria and principles are in line with 12 of 17 goals of SDGs, particularly in establishing inclusive growth and poverty eradication. Yet, there are more spaces in ISPO criteria to adopt SDGs 2015-2030 values. “I can say sustainability is the key to develop palm oil sector,” Darmin said as delivered special address at the 14th Indonesian Palm Oil Conference (IPOC) and 2019 Price Outlook, in Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Nusa Dua, Bali, Thursday (1/11/2018). As published on a press release, Darmin said that at least four elements to strengthen ISPO. First, to strengthen its legal standing through a higher-level decree, from ministerial regulation to presidential level regulation. Second, to involve all stakeholders to contribute in improving transparency process, credibility, and ownership. Third, to introduce a role and function balance among government, private sectors, and communities in implementing ISPO. Fourth, to optimize principle and criteria as tools of compliance test on sustainability principles. ***
