The Indonesian Journalist Association (known as PWI) kicked off a Specialist Journalism Program to improve journalism skill. Specialist journalists can pick a topic that they have a lot of interest in including palm oil.

PWI Launches Specialist Journalism Program, Palm Oil Can be the Subject

BANJARMASIN—An innovative and interesting topic was raised during the 2020 National Press Day held recently in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The Indonesian Journalist Association (known as PWI) kicked off a Specialist Journalism Program to improve journalism skill.

Specialist journalists focus on singular areas of research, investigation, and reporting. They concentrate on a certain topic, allowing them to gain pertinent knowledge and expertise in that area.

Specialist journalists can pick a topic that they have a lot of interest in whether in sports, science, technology, the arts or many other subjects, including palm oil.

A talk show was held during the launching ceremony of the program, (7/2/2020), presenting Chairman of the Indonesian Press Council, Mohammad Nuh as the keynote speaker.  The talk show also had the presence of several speakers: President Director of the Indonesian Oil Palm Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS), Dono Boestami; Chief of Public Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Kuntoro Boga Andri; and Operation and Public Service Director of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog), Tri Wahyudi.

M Nuh said that palm oil can be a choice of the subject of specialist. “We welcome journalists to become specialists in certain areas, in palm oil sector for instance. You can pick a topic you have interest a lot of in, including in banking, agriculture and many more,” he said.

To introduce palm oil as the subject of specialist journalism, Dono Boestami delivered a presentation on recent relevant issues in palm oil sector, including sustainable palm oil.   

Specialist Journalism Program allows journalists to explore the research, writing and presentation skills necessary to produce content related to a selected specialist subject area. Specialist journalists are not only able to produce descriptive news, but also to offer solution to many issues as well as to play more parts in educating the life of the people. The Indonesian Press Council will be the organization that gives specialist journalists the certification. **
