Indonesia`s Biodiesel Enters EU Market Again

Indonesian palm oil producers and exporters are now more optimistic as the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled in favor of several challenges by Indonesia to anti-dumping duties imposed on its biodiesel exports to the European Union. For Indonesian biofuel producers and exporters, as well as crude palm oil (CPO) producers, the WTO ruling gives rise to optimism as the EU is a big market in terms of biofuels. This means biodiesel export to EU will start again soon after one year halt. During the vacuum period, EU substituted palm oil-based biodiesel with soybean oil. According to Paulus Tjakrawan, vice chairman of The Indonesia Biofuel Producers Association (Aprobi), there was a small number export on May. “There were several companies exporting biodiesel on May,” he said in Jakarta, (1/6/2018). Tjakrawan further revealed that the biodiesel export was the first for 2018 and zero export was made to EU on the first quarter of this year. “Because we have just exported, the biodiesel export to EU is estimated to be around 500.000 kiloliters at the most in 2018.” The estimation is obviously much lower than the biodiesel export made to EU in 2014 which reached 1.8 million kiloliters. The biggest challenge now is reconnecting with EU and the low number of export made was because of that, Tjakrawan stated.
